On October 20, 2008, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA), and Friends in Deed presented a special benefit concert celebrating the 35th anniversary of the release of Elton and Bernie Taupin's legendary double album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
The concert, held at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre, raised over $1 million to support the three nonprofit organizations.
Produced by Tony Award-winning Broadway veteran Jeffrey Seller, directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Andy Blankenbuehler, with music direction by Tom Kitt, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road featured performances by Elton John, Jane Krakowski, Ben Folds, Joey Arias, the cast of New York Shakespeare Festival's Hair, Melissa Hough, Larry Keigwin, Mary McBride, Lin-Manuel Miranda, John Cameron Mitchell, Kelli O'Hara, Sherie Rene Scott, Jake Shears, Stew, The Broadway Inspirational Voices, the cast of Disney's The Lion King, Rufus Wainwright, and Patrick Wilson.
Elton, who along with Bernie Taupin and David Furnish was watching the show from the audience, came onstage for the last three songs from his and Bernie's wonderful, possibly finest, album. First of all he sang Roy Rogers, then was joined by Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears for Social Disease, and then most of the cast returned for the finale of Harmony.
